Steelhead fishing is starting to heat up on the Gold and Heber Rivers. Tales of catching 5-10 fish a day on the Gold and 1-5 fish a day on the Heber are flying fast and furious amongst the regulars and guides who fish the two rivers religously. Not hard to image actually once you factor in all the high water and colours changing on a daily basis...
Buddy of mine stopped in today and told me that he has caught and released between 5-10 steelhead on the Heber alone in the last couple of days. He says the stretch of water between Saunders Creek and the highway 28 crossing has been really productive.
The usual haunts on the Gold are producing also. The garbage run when the water drops a little is doable with a little wading to get away from the overhanging tree branches. Of course if the water has dropped to normal winter levels you would be able to walk out on the rocks to get away from the tree branches. The canyon is fishing well also when you can get there with some semblence of safety trekking down the trail to the water. The Lions Campground and Big Bend are also producing when the water levels drop and the colour is just starting to change. The golf course run is probably the best in the lower sections of the river based on the results. Fishing is good above the Gold River bridge (1)to the Tsxanna bridge (2). Especially along the gravel road towards the Head Bay forestry road. The run alonside the tressel bridge has been good using brass spoons. And of course above the second bridge is always good but also a good walk.
If you take a look at the following images you will see the peak water levels and the rough time between them is 4-9 days. Other words 2-6 days of fishing with rain to colour the water as you can also see from the image.
